Why we bake every cake to order and never keep cakes waiting

Quick Answers

Same-day cake delivery in Romford and East London (Cake Trays)

Order: CakeTrays.co.uk • Call: 0208 054 4703 • Instagram: caketrays4eastlondon

Every cake we sell is baked for one order, by us, for the date you picked. We do not keep ready made cakes on a counter, in a fridge or in a freezer waiting for someone to come along, and that single choice shapes almost everything about how you buy from Cake Trays.

This post explains what baking to order actually means, why we have never wanted to work any other way, and the honest trade off that comes with it. We have also looked at our own order book to show you when East London tends to order, so you can plan yours without stress.

The short answer: every cake is baked for one order

When you place an order, you are not reserving a cake that already exists. You are booking a slot in our kitchen. The sponge is baked for your date, the buttercream is whipped for your cake, and the piping, colours and message are done by hand to match what you asked for in the order notes.

That is why our checkout asks you to choose a date and a delivery or collection slot before you pay. The calendar is not a formality. It is the list of days we can still fit another cake in properly, and once a day is full, it closes.

It also explains why there is nothing to browse in person. We are a family-run bakery in Dagenham, East London, and everything we make leaves the kitchen already promised to someone.

What baked to order means for your cake

Three things change when a cake is made for one person rather than for a shelf.

The sponge. A cake baked for your date has not spent days in a chiller or been thawed from frozen. Our classic Birthday Cake comes in vanilla or chocolate sponge, layered with buttercream, and it is made for the day you chose. Sponge is at its softest and most forgiving when it is fresh, and that is the whole point of a celebration cake: people should want a second slice.

The piping. We only work in buttercream, and buttercream piping does not wait well. Shells, rosettes and ruffles look their sharpest when they are freshly piped and kept cool. Baking to order means the piping you see on the day is the piping we did for you, not something that has been sitting under lights.

The message and the design. A pre made cake can only say "Happy Birthday". A cake made to order can say your child's name, your mum's nickname or an inside joke, in the colour you picked, on the design you chose. A piped message is what turns a nice cake into their cake, and that only works because the cake does not exist until you tell us what to write.

Why we do not keep ready made cakes

Plenty of places sell cakes off a counter, and for a quick treat that works. For a celebration cake we think it gets the priorities backwards.

A cake that is baked before anyone has ordered it has to be designed for nobody in particular. It has to survive in a display for as long as it takes to sell, and the bakery has to guess how many to make. Guess too many and cakes get thrown away or frozen. Guess too few and the shelf is empty. Either way, the customer gets whatever is left rather than what they wanted.

Baking to order flips that. We know exactly how many cakes we are making each day, who each one is for and what it needs to look like. Nothing is baked to sit and wait, so nothing is wasted, and every bit of time in the kitchen goes into a cake that someone has already chosen.

It also keeps us honest. When every cake has a name on it, there is no such thing as a cake that is good enough to go out. It either matches what the customer asked for or it does not leave.

The honest trade off: you plan ahead, we bake for you

We will not pretend there is no catch. If you want a cake baked for you, you cannot decide on the way home that you would like one in ten minutes. You need to order before the day, and on busy weekends the calendar fills up.

We think that is a fair trade. A birthday or an anniversary is rarely a surprise to the person organising it, and a few minutes of planning gets you a cake that was made for the occasion rather than picked from what was left. What we will never do is promise a slot we cannot keep. The calendar in the cart shows only the dates and times that are genuinely open, so if you can see it, you can book it.

Our advice is simple: as soon as you know the date of the party, pick the cake and book the slot. You can always add the details of the message in the order notes at the same time.

When East London orders: Friday busiest, Sunday quietest

We looked at every order placed with us since January 2023, 4,479 in total, and grouped them by the day of the week the order was placed. This is when people book, not when their cake arrives.

  • Friday: 744 orders, our busiest ordering day
  • Saturday: 680
  • Thursday: 677
  • Tuesday: 660
  • Wednesday: 641
  • Monday: 562
  • Sunday: 515, our quietest ordering day

Our reading of this is that a lot of people sit down at the end of the working week to sort out the weekend and the week after. Friday alone accounts for about one in six of all our orders, and Thursday to Saturday together is close to half.

What that means for you: if your party falls on a weekend, other people are booking for the same weekend at the same time as you. Ordering earlier in the week, or a week or more ahead, gives you the widest choice of slots. Sunday is the quietest day to place an order, which makes it a good evening to sit down and plan the following week.

How to pick your date and slot in the cart

Booking takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Choose your cake. Our classic Birthday Cake is £32.99, the Drip Birthday Cake is £38.99 and our Heart Cake is £39.99. You can see every heart design in our heart cakes collection.
  2. Write your message and any colour requests in the instructions box on the product page.
  3. In the cart, choose delivery or collection, then pick your date and slot from the calendar. Only open slots are shown.
  4. Check out. The date you picked is shown on the checkout page so you can confirm it before you pay.

For delivery, our weekday slots run in the evening from 6:30pm to 10:30pm, Saturday is a full delivery day, and on Sunday we deliver from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. Delivery is £4.99 across East London and Essex; you can see the areas we cover on our East London cake delivery page. If you would rather collect, collection from Dagenham is by appointment, booked the same way in the cart.

A tip for weekend parties: an evening delivery the day before means the cake is home and in the fridge before the party starts, with no waiting around for a doorbell on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cake Trays cakes made fresh?

Yes, every cake is baked for one order and made for the date you choose at checkout. We do not keep ready made cakes in a display or freezer.

How far in advance should I order a birthday cake?

Order as soon as you know the date of the party, especially for a weekend. The calendar in the cart shows every date and slot that is still open, and Friday is our busiest day for new orders, so weekend slots can fill early.

Can I buy a cake without ordering ahead?

No, because we only bake to order and there are no ready made cakes to pick up. Choose your cake online, then pick the earliest date and slot the calendar offers.

Can I add my own message to the cake?

Yes, every cake can carry a hand piped buttercream message. Write it in the instructions box on the product page along with any colour requests.

When do you deliver?

We deliver on weekday evenings from 6:30pm to 10:30pm, all day on Saturday and from 12:30pm to 2:30pm on Sunday. Delivery is £4.99 across East London and Essex, and collection from Dagenham is by appointment.
