The Nikkah is one of the most important moments in a Muslim couple's life. The ceremony itself is intimate and meaningful, and the cake that sits at the centre of the celebration carries a weight that goes beyond just dessert. It needs to look right, taste right, and meet the halal standards that matter to your family. At CakeTrays.co.uk we have been making Nikkah cakes for couples and families across East London since we opened. Every cake is 100% halal-friendly, baked fresh to order, and personalised to your day. This guide covers everything you need to know about ordering a Nikkah cake, from designs and pricing to halal standards and delivery.
What Is a Nikkah Cake and How Is It Different?
A Nikkah cake is a celebration cake made specifically for a Nikkah ceremony, the Islamic marriage contract that formalises the union between a couple. In many South Asian and Muslim communities across East London, the Nikkah is held as a separate event from the Walima reception, often at a smaller venue or at home with close family. The cake plays the same role at a Nikkah that a traditional wedding cake plays at a Western ceremony. It is the centrepiece of the table, the focal point for photographs, and the moment that brings the celebration together when it is cut. The visual style of a Nikkah cake tends to lean toward elegant single-tier designs with personalised inscriptions, soft buttercream finishes, and floral or pearl detailing. The text on the cake usually says Nikkah Mubarak, but it can also be the couple's names, initials, or a meaningful date. What makes a Nikkah cake genuinely different from a standard celebration cake is the requirement that it must be made with halal-friendly ingredients, completely alcohol-free, and without animal gelatine. Every cake we make at Cake Trays meets this standard without exception.
Halal Standards That Actually Matter
This is where many couples get caught out. Some bakeries describe themselves as halal-friendly without actually being clear about what that means in practice. Here is exactly what we mean when we say our Nikkah cakes are halal-friendly. No alcohol of any kind. No alcohol-based extracts, flavourings, or ingredients are used in any cake we produce. Some bakeries use vanilla extract that contains alcohol as a carrier, even in cakes labelled halal. We do not. No animal gelatine. Gelatine derived from animal sources is not used in any of our products including buttercream, fillings, or decorations. No cross-contamination concerns from non-halal ingredients in our standard production environment because we simply do not work with non-halal ingredients. Halal-friendly does not mean certified halal. We are not a certified halal-only bakery in the formal sense, which is why we use the term halal-friendly rather than halal-certified. For most Muslim families in East London this distinction is acceptable as long as the ingredients meet the standard, but if you specifically need a certified halal-only product, we would always rather you ask us before ordering than assume. Read more on our halal cakes page.
Our Nikkah Cake Designs
The full wedding, Nikkah and engagement cakes collection includes 14 designs, all of which can be ordered for a Nikkah with the appropriate inscription. These are the most ordered Nikkah cakes from our customers across East London.
Nikkah Mubarak Wedding Cake at £114.99 is our dedicated Nikkah design and the most ordered Nikkah cake in our range. Single-tier ivory buttercream with a personalised Nikkah Mubarak topper, designed specifically for the ceremony. The price point makes it accessible for smaller intimate Nikkahs without compromising on design quality.
Vintage Two Tier Cake at £174.99 is the most popular two-tier choice for larger Nikkah ceremonies and combined Nikkah-Walima events. Hand-piped buttercream swags, rosettes, and pearl detailing on both tiers. Currently on sale and a strong value option for couples wanting tiered presence.
Ivory and Gold Initials Two Tier Wedding Cake at £199.99 is one of our most personalised options. The cake itself features ridged ivory buttercream with ivory roses and the focal point is the personalised gold initials topper, configured to your couple's initials at the time of order. Particularly popular for Nikkah ceremonies where the couple wants the cake to feel uniquely theirs.
Vintage Burgundy Pearl Lambeth Two Tier Wedding Cake at £174.99 is the strongest option for Nikkah ceremonies with a richer or autumnal colour palette. The burgundy rose piping with pearl accents creates a more dramatic look than the ivory designs and works particularly well for evening Nikkahs.
Pearl Offset Two Tier Wedding Cake at £229.99 is our most premium Nikkah option for couples wanting a contemporary, modern aesthetic. The offset stacked design with hand-placed pearl detailing and cascading blush florals is a strong statement piece for couples wanting their Nikkah cake to feel modern rather than traditional.
How Many People Should Your Nikkah Cake Serve?
Nikkah ceremonies range from very intimate gatherings of immediate family only to larger events of fifty or more guests. The right cake size depends entirely on the format of your day. For Nikkah ceremonies of up to twenty guests, a single-tier cake like the Nikkah Mubarak Wedding Cake is exactly right. For mid-sized Nikkahs of twenty to forty guests, a single-tier cake is still appropriate, particularly if you are also serving other desserts. For larger Nikkahs of forty or more guests, a two-tier cake provides better visual presence and ensures there is enough cake to share across all guests. Our two-tier wedding cakes serve approximately 60 to 75 wedding slices in the smaller size and 105 to 125 in the larger size. If you are unsure, message us with your guest count and we will recommend the right size for your specific celebration.
Personalising Your Nikkah Cake
Every Nikkah cake we make can be personalised in meaningful ways at no extra charge. The wording on the cake or topper can be changed to suit your preference. The standard inscription is Nikkah Mubarak, but you can also choose the couple's first names, initials, the wedding date, or a short meaningful phrase. The Arabic script for Nikkah Mubarak in Urdu or Arabic can be discussed if requested in advance. Colour palette can be adjusted to match your theme, particularly useful if you are coordinating the cake with bridal lehenga colours or venue decoration. The flavour can be vanilla or chocolate sponge with smooth buttercream filling, and tiered cakes can have different flavours for different tiers. For more elaborate personalisation requests such as bespoke custom toppers, contact us before ordering as these may require up to four days of preparation time.
How Far in Advance to Book Your Nikkah Cake
For Nikkah ceremonies during peak wedding season from May to September we recommend booking at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance to secure your date, particularly for weekend ceremonies. For weekday Nikkahs and ceremonies outside peak season, 1 to 2 weeks notice is usually achievable. For shorter notice, single-tier Nikkah designs like the Nikkah Mubarak Wedding Cake can often be turned around at 48 to 72 hours' notice subject to capacity. Same day delivery is possible on selected designs when you order before the cut-off shown at checkout. The earlier you book, the more design flexibility and personalisation options are available. If your Nikkah is in the next few days, call us directly on 0208 597 5629 and we will tell you immediately what is possible.
