A custom wedding cake is the difference between a cake that goes well with your day and a cake that feels like a genuine extension of it. Your colours, your flowers, your initials, your style. At CakeTrays.co.uk we work with couples one to one to design wedding and Nikkah cakes that fit the day they have planned, not the templates they have seen elsewhere. Every cake is fully halal-friendly, baked fresh to order, and delivered across East London and Romford. This guide walks you through what is possible, how the design process actually works, and how to brief us properly so the cake that arrives on the day looks exactly like the cake you imagined.

What Counts as a Custom Wedding Cake?

There is a difference between a personalised cake and a fully custom cake, and it helps to understand which one you actually need. Personalisation means adding your details to one of our existing designs. Names, initials, a wedding date, a Nikkah Mubarak inscription, a colour shift within the same family. This is included in the price of every wedding cake at no extra charge and is what most couples actually want once they see what is available. Customisation means changing the design itself in meaningful ways. Different floral palette, additional decorative detailing, custom toppers, gold leaf, metallic detailing, or building toward a specific colour theme that requires precise matching. Customisation is where the work and time investment go up. Bespoke means designing a cake from scratch based on a brief, a Pinterest board, or a photo you have seen elsewhere. This is the most involved option and requires the longest lead time. Most couples who think they need a fully bespoke cake actually need a customised version of one of our 14 existing designs, which is faster, more reliable, and just as beautiful.

What Can Actually Be Customised?

Almost every visual element of a Cake Trays wedding cake can be tailored. Here is what is realistic.

Colour palette. Standard designs use ivory, cream, and the colours shown on the product page. Switching to a specific palette like burgundy and gold, blush and pink, all white, lilac, or red is possible. Darker or unusual colour requirements may incur an additional charge depending on the colour and the volume of buttercream involved.

Floral style. The piped buttercream rosettes, swags, and floral decorations on our cakes can be adjusted to suit different aesthetics. Tighter clusters, looser arrangements, more or less density, different flower types within the buttercream piping. We can also discuss replacing piped florals with non-edible decorative florals or fresh flowers if you have a specific vision in mind.

Personalised toppers and inscriptions. Names, initials, Nikkah Mubarak, Mr and Mrs, Walima, the wedding date, or a short personal phrase. Standard toppers are included. Fully bespoke custom toppers require up to 4 days of preparation time and may incur additional charges.

Tier configuration. Most of our wedding cakes are available as single tier or two tier. For larger weddings, additional tiers can be discussed by direct enquiry, but we recommend pairing a two-tier cutting cake with our affordable cake bake trays from the kitchen for guest portions, which is more cost-effective than a three-tier or four-tier cake.

Sponge and filling combinations. Vanilla or chocolate sponge with smooth buttercream filling. Each tier can have its own flavour if you want guests to have a choice. A common pairing is vanilla base, chocolate middle, and Biscoff or strawberry top tier.

Detailing additions. Pearl beads, metallic detailing, gold leaf accents, ribbon work, and lace patterns can all be discussed. The level of detail you can include depends on the design you start from and the time available.

What Is Harder to Customise

Honesty matters here so you can plan around it. Replicating a specific cake from a competitor or an Instagram image exactly is generally not what we do. We can take inspiration from a reference image and design a cake in that style, but we do not produce direct copies of another bakery's signature designs. If you have an image you love, share it with us as a reference and we will create something in the same direction. Fondant work is not part of our standard offering. Our wedding cakes are buttercream-based throughout, which gives them a softer, hand-piped aesthetic. If you specifically want a smooth fondant finish with sharp edges, we are not the right bakery for you. Sugar flower work requiring intricate sugarpaste sculpting is also outside our standard range. We use buttercream piping and decorative non-edible florals, both of which can be beautiful, but neither is the same as bespoke sugar flower work.

The Custom Wedding Cake Design Process

Here is how the conversation actually flows from first enquiry to delivery day.

Step one: initial enquiry. Call us on 0208 597 5629 or message on Instagram at @caketrays4eastlondon or WhatsApp on 442085975629. Tell us your wedding date, guest count, venue location, and the kind of style you are interested in. Send any reference images you have. We will tell you immediately what is realistic for your timeline and budget.

Step two: design consultation. Consultations are available by phone, WhatsApp, or in person. We will go through your reference images, discuss colour palette, work through tier configuration, and agree on a design direction. This is the moment to be specific. The more detail you give us at this stage, the better the cake will be on the day.

Step three: confirmation and booking. Once the design is agreed, we confirm pricing, secure your date with a deposit, and lock in the design specification. From this point your cake is on our production schedule and your delivery slot is held.

Step four: tasting (optional). Tasting boxes can be arranged on request before final booking if you want to confirm the sponge and buttercream combination before committing.

Step five: production and delivery. The cake is baked fresh in the days leading up to your event, never frozen, never prepared in advance. We coordinate delivery timing directly with you in the days before, and on the day itself we deliver to the venue or address you have specified.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a Custom Wedding Cake?

For a fully customised wedding cake we recommend a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks in advance. This is especially important during peak season from May to September when weekend dates fill quickly. For ceremonies outside peak season, 2 to 3 weeks is often achievable. Bespoke custom toppers add up to 4 days to the timeline, so factor that in if a custom topper is part of your design. The earlier you book, the more flexibility you have on design details, the more time we can dedicate to consultation, and the better the result. Late bookings can still produce beautiful cakes, but the design options narrow. For genuinely last-minute custom orders, see our separate guide on last-minute wedding cakes.

Custom Wedding Cake Examples from Our Range

Browse the full wedding, Nikkah and engagement cakes collection to see what is possible. These three are good examples of how customisation works at different price points.

Pearl Offset Two Tier Wedding Cake at £229.99 is our most premium customisable design. The standard version comes with blush and dusky pink florals, but the colour palette can be changed to suit your theme. The hand-placed pearl detailing, modern offset stacked design, and cascading floral arrangement are all hallmarks of a fully customisable centrepiece.

Ivory and Gold Initials Two Tier Wedding Cake at £199.99 is built around customisation. The cake itself features ridged ivory buttercream and ivory roses, and the focal point is the personalised gold initials topper which is configured to your couple's initials at order. A strong example of how a small custom detail transforms a cake into something genuinely yours.

Vintage Burgundy Pearl Lambeth Two Tier Wedding Cake at £174.99 is one of our more distinctive customisable options for couples wanting a bolder palette. The burgundy rose piping with pearl accents shows what is possible when you move away from the standard ivory and pink palette into something richer.

Are Custom Wedding Cakes Halal?

Yes. Every cake at Cake Trays is made using halal-friendly ingredients regardless of how customised the design becomes. We do not use alcohol or animal gelatine in any of our cake products. Customisation never compromises halal status. Read more on our halal cakes page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a custom wedding cake?

A custom wedding cake is one designed specifically for your wedding rather than ordered as a standard design. At Cake Trays we offer three levels of customisation: personalisation (names and inscriptions, included in the price), customisation (colour palettes, floral changes, additional details), and bespoke design (built from a brief or reference). Most couples want a customised version of one of our existing designs.

Can you change the colours on a wedding cake?

Yes. Our standard designs use ivory and the colours shown on the product page, but we can switch to specific palettes including burgundy and gold, blush and pink, all white, lilac, red, or other custom themes. Darker or unusual colour requirements may incur additional charges. Add your colour preference at checkout or call 0208 597 5629 to discuss.

Can I send a Pinterest image or reference photo for my cake?

Yes. Reference images are genuinely helpful in the design conversation. Send them via Instagram at @caketrays4eastlondon or WhatsApp on 442085975629. We use reference images for inspiration and direction. We do not produce direct copies of another bakery's signature designs but we can create something in the same style.

Do you do fondant or sugar flower work?

No. Our wedding cakes are buttercream-based throughout, which gives them a softer, hand-piped aesthetic. We do not work with fondant or detailed sugarpaste flower sculpting. We use piped buttercream florals and decorative non-edible florals, both of which produce beautiful results.

How much does a custom wedding cake cost?

Custom wedding cakes at Cake Trays start from £114.99 for the Nikkah Mubarak design with personalisation included, and go up to £229.99 for the Pearl Offset Two Tier Wedding Cake. Customisation involving major colour changes, custom toppers, or additional decorative work may incur extra charges. Standard personalised toppers and minor design adjustments are included in the price.

How far in advance should I order a custom wedding cake?

We recommend 4 to 6 weeks in advance for fully customised cakes during peak season from May to September. Outside peak season, 2 to 3 weeks is often achievable. Bespoke custom toppers add up to 4 days to the timeline.

Are custom wedding cakes halal?

Yes. Every cake at Cake Trays is made using halal-friendly ingredients regardless of how customised the design becomes. We do not use alcohol or animal gelatine in any of our products.

Do you offer custom wedding cake tasting?

Yes. Tasting boxes can be arranged on request before final booking. This lets you confirm the sponge and buttercream combination before committing to the full design. Call 0208 597 5629 to arrange.
